Thomas A. Dewland

MD

Cardiologist and electrophysiologist
Arrhythmia researcher and trail runner

Dr. Thomas A. Dewland is a cardiologist with particular expertise in electrophysiology, the study of the heart's electrical activity. He cares for patients with arrhythmias (heart rhythm problems) in both the clinic and the hospital. Among other treatments, he performs catheter ablation (in which a flexible tube called a catheter is threaded through a blood vessel to reach the heart and destroy the tissue causing an arrhythmia), pacemaker implantation, implantable cardioverter defibrillator placement and left atrial appendage closure (sealing the heart sac where blood clots form to help prevent stroke in patients with the heart rate irregularity called atrial fibrillation).

In research, Dewland focuses on atrial fibrillation epidemiology (the study of which populations are affected by certain diseases and why). His goal is to identify ways to prevent atrial fibrillation before it occurs.

Dewland earned his medical degree at the Yale School of Medicine. At UCSF, he completed a residency in internal medicine, a fellowship in cardiology and a fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology, as well as the Advanced Training in Clinical Research Certificate Program.

Outside of work, Dewland enjoys spending time with his wife – a pediatrician at UCSF – and their two children.

Cardiac arrhythmia care can be complex, but good patient care is not. I listen to my patients, and together we choose an effective treatment plan.

The reason I travel and choose UCSF MDs is because they are among the best I am able to find in the region. I am grateful to speak with a specialist like this physician who listened to me knew my condition and made me feel like we were choosing the best course of action for my health moving forward.

I was nearly brought to tears when Dr. Dewland asked me what my thoughts were after our discussion. I believe I even asked "Really? You want to know MY thoughts?" In the year since I'd been diagnosed I haven't had a cardiologist ask me that. I appreciated being treated like I might have some insight into my own body and like I have some intelligence about my condition.

The provider did not spend enough time to discuss my health problems. It's like the provider in a hurry.

This is a specialist electrocardiologist who is following both general cardiac health and whether the past episodes of a heart rhythm disorder (A-Fib) is progressing and if so due to what triggers and if so what level of treatment is required. Knowledge of ongoing relevant studies on these issues is extensive. This would be a useful area to survey since UCSF unlike some providers also has an academic function and its clinicians also do research
